So I woke up yesterday in a great mood – the kids had let me sleep in until 7am, bliss. I love my Fridays at home, playing with the girls, taking them to storytime at the library, catching up with friends and generally recuperating from a busy week and preparing for family time on the weekend. I was feeling all maternal and fuzzy as I cuddled a snuggly pj clad Bronte as she drank her morning milk. I idly opened my email on the ipad and with a sinking heart noticed an email from the Chief Scientist of my laboratory. I get a lot of work emails on my days off and they are invariably because things are going wrong, or people need advice on techniques and results. Normally resulting in me trying to pacify two ratty kids as I desperately type technical answers or race outside to stand in the driveway where I can get mobile reception to talk.
So I scanned this email, collecting my inner strength to deal with the drama, particularly as I noted it was CC’ed to my boss’s boss. Imagine my delight when I realised it was a lovely email complimenting me on some interstate work that I had done for a hospital. My boss had been specifically approached at a conference by the Dr who requested the work and he wanted to compliment me to my boss about. So big pat on the back for me!
It left me with the strange feeling that I get – when my life as a mum and life as a career woman collide. The small things in both jobs that are so rewarding but so different in such direct comparison. Sometimes I do feel like two people, and the transition between my work and non-work days can be a bit bumpy.
So sometimes it is nice to feel like you are doing OK at both at the same time!
About Me
- Amy
- I am 30 years old, am a microbiologist with a PhD and love looking after my little farm. I compete in dressage and showjumping with my horses. I have a passion for shopping and a weakness for pretty clothes, shoes and handbags. My husband and I have a gorgeous toddler called Elka and a little bub named Bronte. I am a mother who works and has a career - just don't call me a "working mother". I don't do inside hobbies and craft and have only successfully sewn two things in my life that weren't ripped horserugs. The scientist in me makes me a little cynical and I am more likely to tell you about my life and events then give you a pretty polaroid style picture and an inspiring quote. Not for everyone but I have a bad memory and blogging is my way of recording life :)

If only all days could be so lovely :) Well done!
Wonderful. It is lovely to be acknowledged for a job well done.
How fantastic Amy! Isn't it great to receive compliments and have those victories in both aspects of your life? One of the perks of being a Mum who works - we get double the victories. :)
