Today I had lots of visiting to do. So Elka and I were rushing around this morning getting ready. Now as any mum can tell you, as soon as you take your eye of the proverbial ball, all is lost. As I tried to straighten my hair, brush my teeth and stop Elka from making off with everything unattached in the bathroom, I looked away from bub for about 30 seconds and wasn't really paying attention to her noises and actions.
When I looked over at her again, I blinked, looked again and thought hmmm where has she found red paint from? And then the penny dropped, oh no thats not red paint, that is blood. Not just any blood but my baby's blood and its everywhere - on the vanity cupboards, the towel rack, the bath mat, the bath, her face, both her hands, her suit.... you get the picture.
Cue me trying to stay calm, sweeping her up and searching for the source of the gushing blood. A little detective work revealed that she was basically missing the very tip of her index finger. I am confused - whaaat? I cast my mind back to what she had been doing in the time I was not paying full attention - oh yes she was trying to get into Jase's bathroom drawer, which is of course baby proofed with a drawer locky thing. BUT it lets the drawer open a tiny bit and sure enough in that tiny gap I could see his super sharp razor facing upwards... with blood on it.
Bad Mum.Bad Mum.Bad Mum was running through my head but more important things to do than berate myself right then.
How easy do you think it is to apply firm pressure to the very tip of a tiny toddler finger? Especially one attached to a completely non-fussed toddler who just wants to go off and play since she can't see what all the fuss is about. We bled through more cotton wool then I care to think of.
But after raiding two first aid kits and the horses first aid kit, I managed to strap up her finger firmly and in a way that she couldn't pull it all off with her teeth like she was so desperately trying and the blood started to slow.
Phew, then it was just the blood soaked bathroom and outfits to deal with and we could head off on our mummy visits as though we were a perfect and totally in control mum and bub duo ;)
I am considering this my induction into the Toddler Era and will no longer consider a room is baby-proofed unless it is empty and padded........

Thought I would show one of mum's latest creations for Elka. I love Elka in spots so Mum obliged with some polka dot dresses.

This one is lovely but the other one is even better - it will be her 1st Birthday Party dress for her Polka Dot Party so I won't share it yet :)

So we are finally getting our termite treatment done. The joys of living where we do means that the majority of houses suffer a termite attack at some point. Our place was due for a treatment and our inspection guy actually picked up some active termites attaching to the house so it was time to get it done.. .Well its noisy and expensive to say the least. They are drilling holes every 200mm along the verandahs that run the entire front and back length of the house, the other ends of the house have had massive ditches dug in the adjacent dirt. Our laundry/study also had to be done as it sits on the verandah concrete rather than the house slab. Our paving had to have all the road base and sand added so that they could dig it up and treat it too.. so its been busy.
Its very expensive too but I figure that is money well spent - what point is there to having a nice home with nice things in it, if it is eaten away and destroyed by termites? The repairs are far more expensive and complicated than the 10 yearly treatments.
But it has also demonstrated to me how used to living rurally I am. The thought of having two workmen here all day, working on my verandahs, looking in the windows and doors at me had me quite freaked out. When I lived in the suburbs during my uni years - I hated the fact that people could see me in my yard, through my windows or hanging my washing out. I was and am again so used to not seeing another living soul during th e day unless I choose to. I marvel at homes in the 'burbs that have large windows looking out onto the pavement or where the neighbours windows are like only a metre away - I get all irrational and freak out imagining having to live there - drives Jase nuts. I also can't stand having my blinds or curtains shut during the day, I get claustrophobic and want to see out.
So I am not loving having tradesmen wandering all around my yard today. but its all for a good cause and I am appreciative of being lucky enough to own a home and be in a position to afford to protect it. But that isn't stopping me from staring at the clock willing today to be over!

I have blogged about my chickens before - they are dear family pets. But they are not blessed with the smarts I am afraid. Today we tried to get some farm work done in between the rain (yes still!) and one of those jobs included cleaning up the chicken shed and trying to get rid of the rats living under their laying box/night perch. I won't digust you with the details of the rats (they are the size of guinea pigs) but in the process we moved their night perch over to the opposite side of the shed. We knew this wouldn't go down too well - our girls are creatures of habit.
Sure enough at 5pm when they start putting themselves to bed, we could hear a lot of squawking and flapping and generally disgruntled chicken noises. Upon investigation, we discovered that Betty (the black chicken) was flying from the current position of the night perch to the old spot and trying with great flapping to hover in the air where her perch should have been. Sigh. Silly chicken.
She must have worked it out as when we checked on the chickens a few hours later she was puffed up asleep in the right spot. Nicole on the other hand - our shy runty chicken was freezing all by herself on a low perch, looking very lonely and sad. So Jase picked her up and moved her up with the others.. hopefully by tomorrow the excitment will all have passed and things will be back to the norm in Chicken world.
Still we aren't much different are we? I am a terrible creature of habit and Elka thrives on her routines... (though I hope if my bed got moved - I wouldn;t insist on sleeping in the old spot LOL)

I have an unhealthy obsession with manchester and today was no different! A trip to the shops to search for polka dot napkins for Elka's birthday party ended with me spending way too much on a new quilt cover. But I couldnt help it - its such a perfect match for the new master bedroom colours.

Shhh I am ignoring the fact that we are extending and putting in a new master bedroom that will most likely be a completely different colour. Who needs logic when you can have pretty bedding instead!

Far out - 11 months. My little one turns one soon. I honestly don't know where that year has gone but I can see that the time has passed when I look at the little toddler racing around the house, a far cry from the little smushed new born I used to have!
She is walking, running and getting up to mischief wherever she can now. Her latest trick is learning to get up from sitting to standing without using something to brace on. She can now push off the ground with her hands and stand - its cute to watch and makes her very independent.
She loves to feed herself with the spoon - most gets to the mouth, except when she gets a little enthusiastic and waves her arms around. She is eating what we eat now - I just chop up the meat a bit and away she goes. The only thing she really isn't a fan of is sandwiches but this miraculously changes if I am eating a sandwich, in which case she always wants most of it! She is having a lot of milk in her weet-bix and this morning she wanted a drink of milk which she loved - we are hoping to move her bottles across to milk not long after she turns one.
I have really noticed a big increase in Elka's understanding of our words and requests. She understands being asked to pick something up, shake something or take something to "mummy" or "daddy". She will point out where the cats are if asked. She knows the moves to a lot of songs now and loves to clap in thr right spot or open her hands to do "Twinkle Twinkle". She chats away in her own language a lot but she seems to be trying out real words - notably bottle, ball, more and milk.
The park has become the place to be - she loves the swings and the bouncy rocky things (what are they called?). She is really into sorting - loves to move blocks between containers and is starting to push around her tractor and bus making appropiate sound effects. She is a big dancer - loves to rock out to nursery ryhmes and the radio alike. The big favourite at the moment is Lily Allen (which makes me laugh) and any song that I love and will sing away to.
And best of all she is big on giving hugs and kisses and big beautiful eye meets that finish with lovely fits of loving smiles and giggles and face touches. Its a beautiful age.

The water currently pouring over our driveway

The paddock between the house and the arena - the water catchment from the properties above us on the hill flows straight through

The dam closest to the house bursting its banks. Our two idiot ducks love riding the rapids in this section

We have had twice our monthly rainfall in the last 36 hours. The rain was orginially welcomed as our water tanks were getting a little low and the winter grass was starting to yellow. but now we are flooding and its getting a little bit stressful.
Half the property is under gushing water - the downside of having a property made up of half a hillside with quite a bit of water catchment. The laundry courtyard that we have dug out in preparation for paving is now a swimming pool. Both dams have broken their banks and are pouring water out into the paddocks. Our piles of delivered soil and paving sand are disappearing into the puddles despite the tarps I have over them.
But most concerning is watching our driveway go under water at the dam crossing. As I drove out taking photos this morning I was concerned that the road might go under. One hour later when I returned from doing the groceries, it was under water. So much so that I had to drive the 4WD through with pace to stop it getting too waterlogged. Needless to say I have emailed Jase and asked him to try and leave work - being an hour away in the city is not where I want him when roads are being cut off, including our own.
I know all will be OK in the long run but I am frustrated - I have put many back breaking hours into lugging gravel onto the driveeway to repair last summers storm damage and now it is all ruined again. Still - my family is alive and well and really I shouldnt complain!
I grew up in Northern NSW - a stunning place and well known for its wet weather and floods. I was often evacuated from school due to flooding and our family property would regularly get cut off. So I have a fair apreciation of flooding.
One thing that I always notice is the difference between city and country people with rain. I experience it alot at work since I commute in from a farm to work with inner city people. One - they barely ever notice or care if it is raining or not, whereas I am always checking the sky and or the BOM site or commenting on the chance that there was rain mentioned in the weekly forcast. Secondly - they love to jump in and complain once heavy flooding rain is occuring - really how is it affecting you? The two steps you have to take between house-car-work that arent concreted were a little muddy? oh poor you, I wish I could feed my poor animals without sinking below my workboots into saturated clay that is like quicksand. The traffic is slow on the way to work? At least you got your car off your place - our place is normally so waterlogged that we would drag the cars out with the tractor. And thirdly - City people love to dig out their pristine Driza Bone coats to wear out on the pavement when they have finally noticed it is "really raining". Trust me I have a Driza Bone - they are heavy, smelly and like being in a sauna - perfect for wearing on the horse in the freezing rain - been there done that plenty of times or for when you are wading through your paddocks but I would never choose to wear one in the City where I didnt have too!
OK whinge over ;) Needless to say I am not a happy chappy today - and mood was not improved when I saw that a tree has fallen on one of our perimiter fences. Something else to add to the To Do list once this rain lets up.
Stay dry and make sure you appreciate your concrete footpaths today!

So I was lying back feeling blissed out from my spa day, feeling a million bucks after all the spa's, steam rooms and plunge pools and from realising that I had somehow lost a couple of kilograms without noticing and looked good in my bikini, when the dimmed lights above my treatment table were turned up and my facial therapist appears in my view spruiking products for me to buy. All well and good until I tune into what she is trying to sell to me - a plumping cream for the wrinkles on the side of my eyes and a cleanser that is better for my "ageing skin".
Well did my mood drop like a tonne of bricks! Not so blissful now!
I did get over it and enjoy the rest of the lovely day I promise. But now I have a new obsession - I looked at Age Defying foundation today - sigh there is always something to fixate on isn't there! Hmm maybe if I put those couple of kilograms back on - they might fill out my eye wrinkles!

On the countdown to tomorrow and my day at the day spa - Splash at Surfers Paradise - pictures above. Cant wait! Pedicures, massages and facials as well as full access to the bathhouse and hydrotherapy pools. Robes, slippers and a room with food and teas all day. What makes it really special, is sharing it with my mum.
oh we all deserve days like this! Bring it on!

I have decided to participate in Tracey's project where you photograph a day in your life - you can find it here if you would like to join in.
No I know a lot of people were excited about picking a day in May that they were doing something different or fun on. But I decided to go the other way and record my plain vanilla day - the regular days that I have at home when Jase is working and I am not and I am minding Elka. Often I go shopping or to meet a friend but this particular day I didn't even leave the farm. Yes its boring ;) but its what I wanted to remember for future reference :) PLus the photos aren't the best, I was trying to take quick snapshots whenever I had time...
6.30am - brr its cold and time for slippers, I get up as Jase leaves for work and get a few things done before Elka wakes up at 7am

8am - Breakfast time for Elka - so much cleaning for me!

10am - Elka is asleep, I have the baby monitor (down my bra!) and I am calling in the horses.

10.10am - groomed and saddled up for a ride - my beautiful boy Spech and his gentle eye.

11am - clipping the horse for our competition on the weekend (Elka still sleeping and baby monitor still attached to me)

12pm - Elka stealing the rice cakes out of the pantry and upending them everywhere. She proceeded to take one bite out of as many as she could before I could get them cleaned up!

2.30pm - Doing some work from home while Elka is having her afternoon sleep.

3.45pm - Elka likes to watch 5 minutes of Hi 5. That is all the tv she watches and 5 minutes is the longest she will sit still anyway but she loves it and always turns to make sure I am watching the funny bits so that I will laugh with her.

4pm - my milo - I have to have a daily milo, its an addiction left over from pregnancy. I don't drink coffee anymore so I have just transferred over to sugar as my pick me up really!

4.30pm - putting the chickens to bed. They wait for me at the garden fence like clockwork every afternoon. They are lovely gentle girls who love dirtbaths in the sun.

4.45pm - walking up our driveway to the mailbox - its a decent walk since our driveway runs nearly the length of our property plus it meanders and has a hill at the end :)

5.00pm - feeding the ducks whilst I mix up the horse feed in the shed

5.05pm - feeding the horses their night feed and putting on their night rugs over their day rugs to keep them toasty warm!

5.30pm - playing with Elka in the garden. This is becoming a familar view now that she is walking and running!

6.30pm - Daddy is home! Elka has had her bath and is having her night bottle and some Daddy cuddles before going to bed at 7pm.

7.30pm - Dinner is eaten, kitchen tidied and time for me to sit down and chill out...

Sometimes I get a little sick of just being defined as a mum. Yes I am a mum - its now as much part of me as being female or 5ft 6 tall. I love it. But it does not singularly define me. I am so much more.
Sometimes I also get a little bored with people that only think of themselves as mums. Their facebook status is always about their child.. their blog is only about their child.. their conversation is only about babies/children (this is NOT directed at anyone in particular - please dont take offence) and I feel that their only great achievements are what their child does.
Of course your child and their achievements/milestones are amazing and make your life so much richer and more meaningful. But what about you, your heart, your soul?
What do you do for yourself in a day, in a week. What things/hobbies/loves/laughs makes you what you are.
I love the outdoors - I love feeling fit, healthy and strong striding outdoors in the sun, with the breeze blowing across my skin. I love standing next to my beautiful horses grooming them. I love training them and teaching half a tonne of horse flesh to respond to gentle pressure of one leg or a twitch of the rein. I love the adrelanin rush of galloping between jumps and soaring over them. Sometimes I think of that Faithless song "this is my church, this is where I heal my hurts". That is what spending time for myself outside does for me. Working at my career also makes me feel the same - I love challenging myself, working to deadlines, feeling intelligent and well trained. And it makes me a better mother - I come home refreshed and renewed. And I will teach my daughter that she can be so much - strong, independent and able to achieve goals.

And that is why tomorrow, when I spend most of Mothers Day at a dressage competition, I will not feel like I am missing out one bit even though I will be up and out of bed long before others are being brought breakfast in bed. I am celebrating "me" in the best way I can think of. And I know that my little one will be waiting to give me a big hug when I get home.
I hope everyone has a lovely Mothers Day, feels appreciated for what they are and doesn't get given an iron! (My idea of the worst present to buy someone else! Just buy me a ball and chain at the same time)

I am starting to get organised for Elka's 1st birthday party. I have an invite done.. I have a guest list.. I have food planned.. and I have my polka dot theme chosen.
I dont want to go over board. I think parents sometimes get a little nuts with 1st birthday parties and I want somewhere to go with the next 10 years of parties to plan! Dont want to peak too early! Some of my mummy friends are talking petting zoo's and jumping castles for their bub's 1st birthdays - gosh!
So anyway - its to be an afternoon tea on the back lawn with lots of polka dotty food and decorations. We have our own petting zoo anyway! The ducks and chickens will be there, the horses will be hanging over the fence and our magpies will be stealing food off the table or out of people's hands.
I have been working on the theme today - I have ordered lilac and pale green polka dot balloons. Arent they lovely!

Next I am on the hunt for polka dot napkins. Anyone seen any???

Elka's hair is finally long enough to put into pigtails! Something I have been looking forward to ever since I found out I was having a girl.
But sniff sniff she looked so big with her hair done! My baby is all gone at 10 months, who would have thought! I have a walking, talking little girl :) She shocked Jase when he got home from work and he saw her looking all grown up.
Oh and yes I am letting her eat the remote so that she would sit still for a photo. Hey I have never let on that I am Mum of the Year! ;)
Saturday, 2 May 2009
Yesterday I dressed Elka and I, and got ready to go to the shops. As we went to leave I realised we were looking like twinnies with bow tops, jeans and our fringes pinned back. Whoops! Definitely time to get out more ;)
Here we are - incidently I love my bow singlet and I adore that t-shirt on Elka so neither of us changed. I did take her fringe out of the clip though!

Clearly the man outside the shopping centre that insisted on wolf whistling at us over and over again didnt have a problem with the mother/daughter outfits (what a loser!!). I have ranted about this before but why do men try to pick women up who are pushing a baby in a stroller? Surely the chances of rejection are going to be pretty high!
Anyways - I remember when I was a little girl, Mum sewed both her and I a dress in the same fabric. Whenever Mum put her dress on, I would run into my room and change into mine. Poor Mum! It must have been a little embarressing for her!

About Me
- Amy
- I am 30 years old, am a microbiologist with a PhD and love looking after my little farm. I compete in dressage and showjumping with my horses. I have a passion for shopping and a weakness for pretty clothes, shoes and handbags. My husband and I have a gorgeous toddler called Elka and a little bub named Bronte. I am a mother who works and has a career - just don't call me a "working mother". I don't do inside hobbies and craft and have only successfully sewn two things in my life that weren't ripped horserugs. The scientist in me makes me a little cynical and I am more likely to tell you about my life and events then give you a pretty polaroid style picture and an inspiring quote. Not for everyone but I have a bad memory and blogging is my way of recording life :)
